Here We Come A-Whistling

This album was recorded in December 2019. It was the last recording we made before our leader, wife, mother, and grandmother, Judy Bush, passed away in February of 2020. We miss her dearly and hope that the music may live on in her greatly missed absence. Judy was the heart and soul of the band.

  1. Ding Dong, Merrily on High—The tune to this Christmas carol was originally a dance tune in the 1500s.  We slowed it down for a beautiful vocal trio. Crystal (lead), Brittany, Amanda -vocal, John-banjo, Amanda-harp, Judy-accordion, Nolan-guitar, Brittany-mandolin, Ed-bass.
  2. Santa Never Brings Me a Banjo—John brought his country twang to sing about his true love (besides Brittany) – the banjo. The banjo may not be for everyone, but we’ve sure loved it!  John (lead), Crystal, Brittany-vocals, Brittany-mandolin, Judy-guitar, Ed-bass.
  3. Sussex Carol—This is an upbeat, traditional carol heralding the birth of the baby Jesus. We too echo the lyrics “Glory to God and peace to men, now and forevermore”.  Brittany (lead), Crystal, Amanda-vocals, Amanda-accordion, John-guitar, Judy-pennywhistle, Nolan-cajon, Ed-bass.
  4. My Dear Acquaintance—Amanda’s vocals never disappoint.  This song is about hope for a New Year with the ones you love. We’ve experienced such pain and grief this year and are grateful for the love we have found as a family through music. May the music live on without Judy, our ring leader, and here’s to a New Year in 2021. Amanda-vocal, Brittany-piano, Judy-ukulele, Crystal-viola, Nolan-bass.
  5. Children Go Where I Send Thee—A long, requested song by Judy’s friend. We finally got up the courage to try it with a lot of help from the Skaggs Family. John (lead), Brittany, Amanda, Nolan-vocals, Amanda-violin, Crystal-guitar, Judy-banjo, Ed-bass.
  6. We Three Kings—We Three Kings is the most played song in Whistling Prairie history. It has hit us especially hard this year as we are turning to the Lord and hoping for a better tomorrow. On this version, Judy, Ed and Brittany collaborated together for a beautiful rendition worthy of playing in two separate church meetings. Brittany-hammered dulcimer, Judy-guitar, Ed-bass.
  7. The Seven Joys of Mary—A traditional song describing the seven joys of Mary, or important events in her life that were popular in medieval devotion. Even though the joys of Mary may have historically reached fifteen different events, we’re glad the song stopped at seven! Brittany-vocals and bodhran, Amanda-vocals and accordion, Crystal-vocals and penny whistle, John-guitar, Judy-mandolin, Nolan-tambourine.
  8. Il Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant—John’s parents were gracious enough to share their vocal (and French) talents on this traditional version of He is Born the Divine Christ Child. Ellis and Marti Nuttall-vocals, John-autoharp, Brittany-hammered dulcimer, Amanda-harp, Nolan-djembe, Crystal-pennywhistle.
  9. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear—This mysterious version by Sixpence None the Richer will send a chill down your spine.    Crystal-vocals, Judy-guitar, Brittany-mandolin, Amanda-accordion, John-cajon, Nolan-glockenspiel, Ed-bass.
  10. Must Be Santa—Jolly Ed bringing it home singing about the big man, dressed in red! Ed, Mabel (4 yrs old) and Clementine (2 yrs old) combine for the first time in Whistling Prairie history (and hopefully not the last)! Don’t forget to listen until the end! Ed (lead),Mabel, Clementine-vocals, Amanda-accordion, John-guitar, Judy-banjo, Brittany-cajon, Nolan-bass, Crystal-miscellaneous percussion.
  11. Only Thing I Want for Christmas is Just to Keep the Things I’ve Got—This Eddie Cantor song was included on our previous album. It was the only solo recorded by Judy and captured our feelings and struggles this past year. We hope we can truly value the things and people we have. You never know when they might be gone. Judy-vocal lead, Brittany-cello, Ed-bass, Crystal-guitar, Amanda-vocal harmony, John-banjo, Nolan-glockenspiel.
